Concealed Carry Permit

Concealed carry in Missouri has been allowed for a while. You can carry a handgun concealed on your person or in your vehicle without having to get a permit from the State of Missouri. So why get a concealed carry permit? There are some good reasons.

Permits Help When You Travel

I decided to get a permit because I travel by automobile a lot. Now under current Missouri law I do not have to obtain a concealed carry permit in order to have a handgun on my person or in my vehicle. That’s fine when I am in Missouri.

I also travel to other states. Having a concealed carry permit in those other States can save me a lot of hassle should the subject of why I had a handgun on my ever come up. Keep in mind, though, that not every State has what is called reciprocity with Missouri. That means some States do not care whether or not you have a concealed carry permit from Missouri, you cannot have a concealed weapon in their State.

See Reciprocity Map

Here is a map of the States that currently have reciprocity with Missouri.

If you want to take your handgun with you to another State by car then having a Missouri concealed carry permit is a very wise thing to do.

What If?

Suppose you get in the situation where you have to use your firearm. When the police show up, and the police will show up, you are going to at least start by being a person who is responsible enough to take the training and get a permit.

That will have some bearing on the decision about whether or not you were reasonable in using your handgun. Believe me, when you are in the position of having fired your weapon and the police are involved, you want every advantage you can get.

Concealed Carry Benefits

There are certain places in Missouri where you cannot, by law, take your firearm. If you carry a gun into those places and do not have a concealed carry permit you have committed a felony. If you have a permit, though, you are not committing a crime. You may be asked to leave, and must do so, but it is not a crime.

I will be giving a free seminar in St. Charles County in the fall of 2019 about the rights of Missouri gun owners. I will be covering the concealed carry laws as well as the Castle doctrine and Missouri’s Stand Your Ground law. If you are interested in getting a notice about it, send me an email at wayne.schoeneberg@gmail.com and just put Gun Rights in the subject line. I’ll let you know that date, time and place of the seminar. It is free so space is limited and you will have to sign up.
